John Kerry has come to Capitol Hill to deliver the hard-sell on war against Bashar al-Assad in support of Obama supporting the rebels, but the AP, Reuters, and New York Times (Obama supporter) have reports that his supporting data is rather suspect. Kerry, however, insists, as does John McCain, that the Free Syrian Army controls the opposition in Syria and that radical Islamist elements comprise only a small percentage ( 15% to 25%) of rebel fighting units. However, intelligence reports from US and European agencies put the radical Islamists near parity in numbers, and far more in control than Kerry and the Obama administration acknowledge.
Kerry responds by saying that “I just don’t agree that a majority are al Qaeda and the bad guys. That’s not true. There are about 70,000 to 100,000 oppositionists … Maybe 15% to 25% might be in one group or another who are what we would deem to be bad guys. Even if Kerry is correct, can the US really afford to help al Qaeda?
For months, reports of the horrific violence perpetrated by the rebels have been reported, from the apparent execution of Syrian truck drivers for the “crime” of not being Sunni Muslims, to purported video of the rebels executing children who supported Bashar al-Assad and a Syrian rebel cutting out the heart of his enemy and eating it.
Recently, the New York Times published yet another horrific illustration of how ruthless some of the rebels can be, noting that while Assad’s forces have certainly committed atrocities, the rebels certainly are not eschewing violence, and their crimes pose a “dilemma” for the west.
A Senate panel has voted to give Obama the authority to use military force against Syria in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack even while the rebels are cutting the heads of priest and killing Christisns! Not surprisingly, the rebels have ties to al Qaeda – just go here!
Thus, the real question that we must ask, is the White House following the intelligence of its own agencies and that of its allies or is the White House and Obama even following the public events that demonstrate the lack of effectiveness in the FSA and the rise of al-Qaeda-affiliated leadership in the Syrian rebellion in order to prevent Barack Obama’s humiliation?
